Sight Seeing
The Forbidden City is enormous!
After lunch, which was right across the street from Tiannman Square, we walked across the street and into the Square itself. The wind was strong but it was a very sunny day. The square is so vast, pictures hardly do it justice.
There is an underground hallway to get to the Forbidden City from Tiannman Square. There are three gates to get into the city, and the city itself has 9,999 rooms! Here's Kate and Cris outside the second gate, and here's Doug outside the third.
Many of the buildings are under restoration, and the finished results are brilliantly colored. The gleaming gold details under the eaves are actually hammered gold leaf. It would take over a week to see all there is in the City.
Cris took us to see collections of ancient bronze and jade antiques, some of them thousands of years old, that were found in past Emporors' tombs. It's hard to grasp so much history in one day, here are a couple items.
Inside the City is a garden of trees and stone, and right where we walked into the courtyard is this tree with a wide, squat trunk and twisted, horizontal limbs that ended in hooked branches like claws. It's aptly named The Dragon Tree.
There are lots more pictures, click on the adoption photos link on the right sidebar to see more.
